TKD Tidbits by Master Erica Linthorst

Giving form meaning
The eighth (8th) form we learn (color belt Pal-gwe pal-jang, black belt T?ae-guk pal-jang)
represents the Gon, the yin, or concentration of energy, both a
passive and receptive force; the end of the beginning. It is symbolized by the
earth which nurtures and grows everything. It teaches us the importance of the
life force within each of us and to respect life in all its forms. The form is the end
of a circle and also marks the first, second, and so on.

Language we use
In the main dojang of our white Plains school hang two beautifully scribed pieces.
One says
Mu wee jung ja We translate this to mean, love your seniors and respect your juniors
The other is
Pyung sang shim Expresses our philosophy "Always peaceful mind."

These days, we are using more Korean terms during our lessons - let's be prepared! When your Instructor or Master says
Kup sa We should kneel on our left knee while placing both hands over each other on that knee.
This is the response we give to "urgent matter".,P. BE AWARE New etiquette requires that we raise our right arm at 90degree angle
supported by our left hand to ask or answer a question. We will also use
this signal during a test if we make a mistake.
Then, we must wait for permission to continue.

Philosophically speaking
Out of the realm of Aikido, its founder, Morihei Ueshiba discussed"The Principle
of Adjusting Mind and Body". This is from his book Budo: The Teachings of the
Founder of Aikido.

Our enlightened ancestors developed true budo based on
humanity, love, and sincerity; its heart consists of sincere
bravery, sincere wisdom, sincere love, and sincere empathy..

Sports are widely practiced nowadays, and they are good
for physical exercise. Warriors, too, train the body, but also
use the body as a vehicle to train the mind, calm the spirit,
and find goodness and beauty?. Training in budo fosters
valor, sincerity, fiedelity, goodness, and beauty, as well as
making the body strong and healthy.

The Path is exceedingly vast... It is not possible for anyone
to comprehend the entire truth... just head for the light and
heart, learn from the [masters], and through the virtue of devoted
practice become one with the [spirit of the martial art].
