Hiking this Fall 2009

It is always special to hike with Grandmaster in the heights of Bear Mountain. This September 13th was no exception. We had no cool breezes, no beautiful foliage - basically nothing to distract us from the hard trekking ahead. What we had was high spirits, clear intention, and "right mind".

Warm-ups and preparations completed, we strode off in 3 groups: the A group, raring to go was about to run up the red trail; B and C groups would make their way more moderately. And, off we went.

No matter how many times we hike as a community, each occasion has its own "personality". With many willing young children along and grandparents to hold hands the groups began with energy and smiles.

Soon into the walk, legs had to lift higher to get us up ever-steeper territory. We kept to a pace that allowed all 70 or so of us (in C group) to move comfortably yet within the first half hour the legs began to know that they had to work differently, the lungs were aware they were being taxed, and sweat began to run down faces and seep through clothing. We felt good! We breathed fully the fresh air, told some nature stories as our powers of observation of the environment surrounded us improved and paced ourselves.

Tree markings were not always evident or clear and twice we sent scouts ahead to help us on our climb. We made our first stop at an advantageous site where we could appreciate a view, feel the energy around us and have a brief recovery period. What could be better to help us refresh! Then, onward we climbed to make summit. As all the groups came together we were happy to see familiar faces and greetings rang out. Soon after, we were called to practice groups where we trained for a solid 20 minutes. Because this is our style, afterward we mediated quietly ? facing and supported by the energy all around us, experiencing the sun in our bodies, hearing the noises of nature. At lunch time we shared meals and conversation, smiles and photo-taking. Grandmaster was so happy to see all of us and smiling broadly reminded us that hiking is the next best exercise to TaeKwonDo and we should do it often.

Walking down was no piece of cake. We had to be alert to pebbles and slippery spots yet one and all we made it to base without major incidents. Youngest hikers (3 years old) were lifted on strong, willing shoulders; the seniors with walking sticks in hand were troupers. All in all, it was a beautiful way to share part of a day, express our thanks for strong bodies and strong minds, and experience the camaraderie of our school outside the dojang. Many families were chatting about coming out on their own again this Fall.

Was it easy? Was it purposeful? Why is this a requirement for black belt testing?

On a daily basis in our Student Creed we repeat "overcome all obstacles". These are not only our words but our purpose as dictated by one of the Tenets of TaeKwonDo. It refers to the "I can do it!" attitude that builds true confidence and teaches us the lesson that by setting a goal and working toward it we go stronger in every way, each step of the way.

Recently, there was a hit song by Miley Cyrus - maybe some of her lyrics give a hint to the answers. She sings: There's always gonna be another mountain I'm always gonna wanna make it move Always gonna be an uphill battle Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose

Ain't about how fast I get there Ain't about what?s waiting on the other side It's the climb

The struggles I'm facing The chances I'm taking Sometimes might knock me down But no, I'm not breaking

I may not know it But these are the moments that I'm gonna remember most, yeah Just gotta keep going

And, I got to be strong Just keep pushing on???????????????

Consider your greatest benefits from TaeKwonDo and keep them with you always- Asah!
