TKD Tidbits by Master Erica Linthorst

Ceremonies and traditions

Dah-do connotes a time of relaxation when we draw together for intense stretching and finish with our intimate green tea ceremony. All family members are cordially invited to join this very special occasion that will help improve mindfulness while promoting good health.

Giving form meaning

The third (3rd) form we learn (color belt Pal gwe sam-jang, black belt T'ae-guk sam-jang) represents the Ri symbolizing fire. Naturally, fire contains a lot of energy. This means that the poomse should be performed rhythmically with bursts of energy- a continuing flow of motion with explosions of power.

Language we use

As we prepare for our annual tournament, it is important to learn the language used in competition: In the beginning. listen to the call

chung blue (with blue ho-goo)

hong red (with red ho-goo)

Next, the sparring begins with

chary-ot attention

kyong-neh bow

kyorugi-choonbi ready for sparring

si-jak begin

You may hear kal-yo stop

kae-sok continue

If you hear kyong-go warning (the referee show/explains why)

gam-jeum point deduction (same as above)

Finally, keuman may be used to mark the end of final round

Philosophically speaking

Historically, the Korean people are referred to as Han. One of the earliest underlying ideologies of this culture is known as hong-ik-ingan which refers to the universal welfare of mankind. This has been incorporated into the spirit of TaeKwonDo which points to suppressing fighting and inducing peace. This traditional Korean martial arts is characterized by the trinity of body, mind, and life. This core principle should be carried in every step within the dojang.
